Profile for Joseph Dele Atoyebi

Joseph Dele Atoyebi, PhD, is an associate professor in the Faculty of Arts, Business, and Science at the University College of the North, The Pas campus, Manitoba, Canada. Dr. Atoyebi has B.A. and M.A. degrees in linguistics from the universities of Ilorin and Ibadan, respectively. He did his doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Universität Leipzig, both in Leipzig, Germany, under the supervision of world-renowned typologists Professor Bernard Comrie and Professor Dr. Martin Haspelmath and the world-renowned linguist and Africanist Professor Emeritus Ekkehard Wolff. Dr. Atoyebi’s doctoral dissertation, A Reference Grammar of Oko, received an honourable mention in the highly-acclaimed Gabelentz Prize for Outstanding Grammar based on a doctoral dissertation, 2009 – 2012 (https://ling.yale.edu/news/claire-bowern-awarded-honorable-mention- grammar). Dr. Atoyebi is a co-researcher on a seven-year multi-institutional and multinational SSHRC-Canada-funded Partnership on University Plagiarism Project (https://pupp.uqo.ca/en/home/). Dr. Atoyebi is an associate editor for The Quint, an interdisciplinary quarterly from the North (https://www.ucn.ca/the-quint-2/), and the faculty editor of Muses from the North, a journal for students at the University College of the North (https://www.ucn.ca/muses-from-the-north/). Dr. Atoyebi’s areas of focus as a linguist include language documentation, descriptive linguistics, anthropological linguistics, and linguistic typology.
